Check my Math

Using this information:
(One Working Class Woman + One "Progressive" Department)(Gently-spoken bald-faced lies + Evasive non-answers* / Blatant classism that's OK because it's also gendered, a clear violation of all the theories said department holds so dear)

Now divide your answer by sought-for advice (how naive was that?) that's thoroughly unhelpful and even insulting, but at least simple-minded, cold, and dismissive.

At the end of this equation you should be able to calculate the time it will take for the working class woman to go from point A (being an excited student) to point B (having as much contempt for academia as it clearly has for her).

My answer keeps coming up to 26 weeks.

*That a LITERATURE STUDENT is not supposed to recognize, because God knows if there's one thing a literature student can't decipher it's rhetorical weaseling.

Heo, if you're willing to "out" yourself to me, we really ought to talk at K'zoo. You're going to be there, right? (I'm pretty sure I remember that you are.)

Really. I hope you'll either ID yourself to me at the meet-up if you're coming (I think I'll kinda have to be "out" as one of the event organizers) or drop me an email letting me know how we can get in touch.

We have a lot in common.

I'm really sorry you're going through this bull...dooky - I hope it gets more bearable. Are you reconsidering the program?

Thanks, guys. I think just listening/reading and responding was enough, actually. It is nice to know that most academics remember how to be people. Doesn't always feel that way when being "handled" by prominent (within the department) passive-aggressive types.

It's too late for me to apply to new programs for next year, so I will probably be here at Microburg for at least another year. But I'm also looking for local HS teaching jobs for next year so that 1) my only dependence upon this place is educational and temporary, and 2) I spend limited time while here mingling with the weasels.

I'm pretty sure this place isn't representative of all English departments.
